UA’s rendition of Seussical: The Musical was a visually captivating and technically inspiring experience that was enjoyable for all ages. Seussical takes pieces and parts from a variety of Dr. Suess’s beloved classics, such as Horton Hears a Who, Miss Gertrude McFuzz, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, and incorporates them into one seamless production.
Seussical was overall a vibrant and high-energy show--from colorful costume pieces to dynamic personalities, to elaborate set pieces. Seuss’s classic rhyming dialogue also creates a unique and engaging audience experience.
Grace Rudie '23 played the role of JoJo, and she gracefully portrayed childlike awe, wonder, and curiosity through her character. Rudie’s energy was matched by Grace Hoffman '23’s creativity and enthusiasm in her role as the curious tap-dancing Cat in the Hat. Anna Grace Hull '23, who played Gertrude McFuzz, had an effortlessly beautiful belt and portrayed a hilariously lovable character. The character of Mayzie La Bird was portrayed by Josie Lickliter '24, who had stellar vocals in the song “Amazing Mayzie.”
The show could not have been accomplished without a hardworking and creative team behind the scenes. Ellie Allaire '24 and Avery Rudell '24 headed up the costumes crew, which created delightfully attractive costumes that caught the eye and perfectly captured the essence of Dr. Suess’s brilliant imagination. The set crew, led by Wren Kitchings '24 and Megan Young '24, also had their work cut out for them in this show, because of the amount of scenery needed to portray various locations and scenes. They worked diligently and produced a set that could be easily transitioned. They included unique elements such as a moving tree for Horton and rotating backdrops.
Creativity, imagination, and exuberance were all present in this fantastical celebration of the world of Dr. Suess.
