Visual Arts

This is the prerequisite course for all Visual Arts classes. This foundational course provides students with a sampling of many art materials and visual concepts as an introduction to the discipline. Topics and skills covered include: 2D design, contour drawing, tonal shading, mixed media collage, photography, client-based design, painting, perspective, and sculpting with clay. This course prepares students with the necessary vocabulary and experiences to succeed in other art courses.

Coursework is focused on gaining insight on solutions to real-world problems through a client-based approach. Work is done that is applicable to the fields of interior design, fashion design, graphic design, industrial design, and beyond. You can pursue advanced coursework through AP Drawing and AP 2D Art and Design offerings. 

Classes focus on the importance of lighting, exposure, depth, perspective, and composition in photography. You are also able to gain critical exposure to post-production software and digital editing.  

A class where you can use your creativity to experiment with new images and materials with the support of the arts faculty. This course calls on prior techniques learned in fundamentals to pursue new mediums and create truly one-of-a-kind pieces.

You will dig into pinching, coiling, and slab-building designs using the medium of clay. This course also provides you with knowledge of the historical aspects of ceramics. Advanced coursework in hand building in clay is available, allowing you to learn new finishing techniques and explore more sophisticated final forms. Annually, students participate in fun field trips, including a visit to Queen City Clay!

Ursuline is proud to offer specific coursework in enameling, a unique medium that consists of fusing glass to copper by firing in a kiln. You will be exposed to a variety of enameling techniques while using critical color and composition studies to guide your designs.
