Read About Our German Exchange Program

A villa on 5th Avenue in New York City was the setting for a three-day workshop organized by the Goethe Institute and the German American Partnership Program (GAPP), to prepare teachers participating in the program for the first time. Thirty seven German teachers from twenty two states gathered for the intensive introductory workshop. Participants were welcomed on Friday evening by Mr. Hubert Kolb, Consul and Head of the Cultural Department of the German Consulate. Mr. Kolb emphasized the power of high school exchanges in strengthening international understanding. Kolb was followed by Dr. John B. Webb, Director of the Program of Teacher Preparation at Princeton University. Dr. Webb addressed the manner in which high school academic exchanges such as GAPP transcend traditional classroom learning by transplanting the student into the very heart of a new family, community and culture. In this utterly new and different environment, the student is called upon to learn through experience that will reach the very core of her humanity. Relating many examples form his own international experiences, Dr. Webb illustrated the transformative power of experience beyond the familiar.
Next Mr. Uwe Rau, Regional Head of Language Departments for the Goethe-Institute in New York encouraged teachers in various aspects of the exchange. GAPP was founded in 1972 at the Goethe-Institut Boston as a non-profit organization to promote the exchange of young Germans and Americans. The primary goals of the exchange program are to foster the study of foreign languages (German and English) and to increase intercultural awareness and understanding. GAPP is based upon long-term partnerships between German and American secondary schools. These school partnerships:
*Provide and maintain civic and social exchanges, as well as foster personal
contacts between secondary school students and their teachers in the partner
                                   countries.
*Promote German instruction at U.S. high schools.
*Deepen the participant’s understanding of the host country’s culture and way
                                   of  life.
*Establish a foundation for international intercultural understanding and life-long
                                   friendships.
*Break down existing prejudices and stereotypes.
Dr. Hoffman-Jeep attended the workshop and gathered many crucial insights into the preparation of the students for the exchange and as well as into planning the exchange both in Cincinnati and in Germany. She was surprised to encounter two German teachers from Alaska attending the workshop and was encouraged by the unanimous enthusiasm of teachers who are already participating in GAPP, some for over twenty years.
UA will welcome our German Sister School St. Ursula Gymnasium March 20th. In addition to attending classes at UA, staying with host families and exploring Cincinnati and the region, the German students and their two teachers, accompanied by eight of their UA host sisters, led by Dr. Hoffman-Jeep and Dr. Hinkle, will travel to Chicago for a few days of history, art, architecture, culture and fun from April 6-9. If you can offer special tours of business or cultural sites to our guests, please contact Dr. Hoffman-Jeep at lhoffman-jeep@ursulineacademy.org.
