    SOCIAL STUDIES

    The Social Studies Department at Ursuline Academy focuses on student achievement in a variety of courses, designed to educate our students by tracing both the historical roots and contemporary milieu surrounding political, economic, legal and psychological components of the world around them.  This objective is met through the offerings of relevant course work and special  projects and programs.
     
    Social Studies Course of Study
    1. Sophomore Year – required  - US/WORLD CIVILIZATIONS I   (full year)
    2. Junior Year – required – US/WORLD CIVILIZATIONS II   (full year)
    Or  ADVANCED PLACEMENT U.S. HISTORY
    Or  AMERICAN STUDIES (INTERDISCIPLINARY  COURSE,  U.S.  HISTORY AND ENGLISH)
    1. Senior Year – required – U. S.  GOVERNMENT  (1 semester)

    Or  ADVANCED PLACEMENT U.S. GOVERNMENT

      Special features
       
      1. Women in American History – This course is a joint offering designed for Ursuline students and their mothers in the evening, and explores women’s contributions to the history of our country, including the contemporary landscape.
      2. US/WORLD CIVILIZATIONS I  emphasizes the State of Ohio  proficiency indicators, in a comprehensive preparation for the O.G.T. (Ohio Graduation Test- 10th grade), which will be administered toward the end of Sophomore year by the State of Ohio.
      3. Four advanced placement courses are offered by the Social Studies Department, with college credit available upon the successful completion of the College Board exams in May.
      4. Students enrolled in Advanced Placement U.S. History may earn college credit through the Xavier University Collegian Program,
      5. Special programs, projects – Mock Trial competition, Youth in City Government seminars, Model United Nations programs, field trips.
