The English Department is dedicated to
fostering an understanding, appreciation, and expression of thought and
meaning through the use of language. Eight teachers comprise the English
Department, bringing to Ursuline Academy a rich experience of study,
training and practice in the arts of writing, speaking, reading, relating
to and reflecting upon the word. On all four age levels, students choose
either college-prep English or an accelerated honors-level English. The
required English course combines a survey of various literature selections
with the study of vocabulary, elements of grammar and usage, and frequent
opportunities for writing.
Ursuline Academy has developed a
writing program which is incorporated into the required English class.
Based on the belief that all writing is creative and that through
introducing, teaching and reinforcing writing types and specific skills in
a sequential manner, teachers encourage mastery and proficiency in the art
of writing.
Students also may choose English-related electives,
such as Composition, Drama I and Drama II, Journalism, and Oral
Interpretation. Interdepartmental, team-taught seminars combining History
and Literature are offered on the eleventh grade level. Literature of the
Spirit, an interdepartmental course combining Literature and Religious
Studies, is offered on the twelfth grade level.
