Community service is an important part of the Catholic faith tradition
and an important part of an Ursuline education. Using Catholic Social
Teaching as our foundation, UA students are taught to put their faith
into action - respecting the life and dignity of others, hearing the call
to be part of a larger family of God through community, respecting and
protecting the rights of others, placing priority on the needs of the poor
and the most vulnerable in society, respecting the dignity of work and the
rights of workers, learning to live in solidarity, and caring for
God’s Creation.

Summer 2007
Ronald McDonald
House—Three of our regular, ongoing projects begin
during the last week of September and the first week of October. On
September 26, ten students and a parent visited Ronald McDonald House to
cook dinner for the guests and volunteers. Our students fixed and
served tacos and took time to talk with the families over
dinner. Our next visit to Ronald McDonald House is October
24. Families are welcome to assist with this project. See the
Ronald McDonald House link for more details.
Kid’s Café—Kid’s Café is a project done on
most Thursdays. Our first visit to Kid’s Café at our Daily
Bread was on Thursday, October 4. UA students played games,
worked on crafts with the children, and served dinner.
Big Sisters—This year, we have 32 juniors and seniors
who have committed to spending each Tuesday afternoon building a
relationship with a student at Corryville Catholic or St. Boniface
through our Big Sisters program. On Tuesday, October 2 ,each big
sister met her little sister for this school year. Through this
program, our UA students learn to be mentors and caring, guiding friends
to their little sisters. Our students assist with homework,
participate in games, crafts, and other activities, and share a snack at
each weekly session.
More community service projects will be launching soon! Keep
returning to this page for updates on our community service
program.
This past
summer 15 UA students and three faculty members spent a week in San
Antonio, Texas, doing service at the Inman Center and Good Samaritan
Community Center through a program called Young Neighbors in
Action. After our trip, we
invited these students to write some of their reflections to share with
our UA community. The view their
comments, visit our Young
Neighbors page.
