    Career Shadowing

Who: YOU and a person you will select! (We prefer that you not shadow your own parent. It is acceptable, however, to be with someone at the same firm. You might also consider exchanging with a friend to shadow one of her parents.)

What: This is a day for you to experience first hand how a person functions on a job. You will select someone whose job you would like to know more about or whose career you might consider for future employment. During the day that you spend together, you will observe things such as what activities are performed, what interactions occur, the amount of variety in job tasks, the work environment and the degree of independence in the job.

Where: At the selected person’s place of employment.

When: A summer date that you arrange.

Why: The career choices you make affect your life and your lifestyles. During at least some of your lifetime, whether you choose to pursue a career, marriage, family, or some combination of these, you will probably want or need to work. It makes sense to select an occupation that is interesting and fulfilling for you. Career shadowing gives you a first hand opportunity to evaluate an occupation you are considering. This is a required activity and is needed to receive credit for guidance. The one-eighth credit in Career Awareness/College Planning is required for graduation.

How: Think about "what you want to be when you grow up". Is there a career that you have always considered for yourself? Did any of the careers you researched for Career Awareness interest you? Is there a job you’ve heard of and would like to learn more about? Talk to family members, friends and neighbors about their occupations. Make note of those that interest you and ask the individual if he/she would be willing to be shadowed for a day. You will make your own selection and arrangements. For those who need additional suggestions, there is a list in your packet of parents, Ursuline alumnae and others who are willing to have you spend a day with them.
