Endowing the Legacy

The Legacy

From the beginning, the Ursulines of Brown County were committed to providing an Ursuline education to all qualified young women regardless of their families’ ability to afford tuition. With small classes and a faculty comprised entirely of Sisters, their educational promise was kept for decades with minimal financial effect. The Sisters were motivated to teach as a vocation, received modest compensation and lived humble lives. Over the years, the number of religious faculty declined, and nuns were replaced by lay teachers. Hiring excellent instructors made tuition increases necessary and began to make a larger financial impact on school operations. Yet Ursuline remained committed to keeping the Ursulines’ promise.

New Era; New Challenges

In the 1970s, cost of Catholic education in the United States escalated. Increased enrollment, decline in religious vocations plus the retirement of the Sisters accelerated the need to hire more lay faculty and regularly increase tuition. For Ursuline, funding these changes plus sustaining St. Angela’s promise to provide financial assistance to qualified students, posed new financial challenges.

Annual fundraising activities were conducted – many for the first time – to support school operations. Special events and an annual campaign generated new sources of revenue. However, these provided only a temporary solution, as proceeds were modest and were spent as quickly as they were received.

In 1988, Ursuline’s Board of Trustees conducted a fundraising campaign to create an endowment to serve as a permanent resource for addressing the school’s future needs. The decision was unprecedented at the time as none of Cincinnati’s Catholic girls’ high schools had endowed funds. The campaign was successful as the goal of raising $250,000 was achieved. Contributions were deposited in the newly formed Ursuline Foundation, governed by a Board of Trustees.

Creating the Foundation allows the school to invest and grow funds which donors contribute and designate for a specific and future need. Through long term investment, Foundation funds gain interest allowing Ursuline to annually spend only a portion of the amount gained preserving the fund principal in perpetuity.

Our Need

Today, Ursuline funds tuition assistance from the same two sources – annual fundraising activities and a yearly distribution from the Ursuline Foundation. Combined, they generate in excess of $1 million annually, but fall short of providing the full amount of aid needed to aid our students.

Ursuline families’ need for financial assistance has risen exponentially. In spite of the most modest tuition increases in recent history, families seeking aid have increased by 45% and families’ demonstrated financial need has increased by 110% since 2010-11.

It is clear that the number of students as well as the level of financial need will continue to escalate in the coming years. Growth of annual fundraising activities cannot alone meet our increasing demand for financial aid. A sustainable resource for annually providing students scholarships and financial aid is critical for Ursuline to carry on the Sisters’ legacy and assist deserving students.

Endowing the Legacy Campaign

In September, 2013 Ursuline’s Board of Trustees approved the school’s strategic plan and its goal to increase the endowment by $5 million within five years. Achieving this objective helps meet an ever increasing amount of financial aid and provide more worthy students with an Ursuline education. Most importantly, a healthy endowment helps ensure our financial future as it serves as a reliable and permanent resource for providing students with tuition assistance.

Ursuline’s Endowing the Legacy fundraising campaign was formally launched in October, 2014 with the goal of adding $5 million to the endowment. Doing so will:

  • increase the school’s endowment to $13 million
  • increase the annual Foundation distribution for tuition assistance to as much as $500,000 a year
  • provide tuition assistance to an increasing number of students
  • grant higher levels of scholarships and financial aid to worthy recipients

Ways to Give

Gifts to the Legacy campaign may be restricted or unrestricted. Donors may support the campaign in the following ways.

Pledge: Pledge may be completed over as many as five years on a schedule of the donor’s choosing.

Outright gift: Donors may make gifts of cash or appreciated securities. These contributions may be doubled or sometimes tripled by an employer matching gift.

Ursuline as Beneficiary: Ursuline may be named as the beneficiary of a bequest, life insurance policy, trust, annuity or other estate gift.

Naming Opportunity

Endowed funds may be established in the name of the donors, a family member, in memory of a loved one or in another fitting manner with a minimum gift of $25,000. Endowed scholarship funds are awarded by name to student recipients each year and serve as permanent tribute to the honoree.
